Well I'm late to this party, and breaking my new commenting rule, but you wrote:

"I just think that injustice for anyone is injustice for everyone."

Well said. That is wisdom.

Re "The head dress you are reffering to has been donned by millions of kids etc on halloween for decades as well as being an iconic symbol of the native americans and the positive aspects of the native american experience":

In other words, millions of kids have stereotyped Indians as belonging to the Plains cultures of the distant past. And millions of adults have taken the "iconic symbol" to mean that most Indians belonged to the Plains cultures of the distant past. Was that your point, Leslie? If so, you made it effectively.

See "Team Names and Mascots" (http://www.bluecorncomics.com/mascots.htm) and "The Big Chief" (http://www.bluecorncomics.com/chief.htm) for more on the stereotype you so enthusiastically embrace.

while not QUITE the same as blackface, I see where you are going. It is more along the lines of wearing mud cloth. Blackface is not a representation of black culture at all and the fact that you would compare the two is a bit trite. I see where you want to go with this argument but your focus and presentation of issue is bad. Really bad.

Atena,
I have some criticisms of Ruby Payne if you are interested in reading them. They certainly provide another view point. I grabbed ahold of her books initially but after reading some criticism of her work began to see that there is a bit of pathologizing the poor in it. Let me know if you want me to email you the journals.

Hi, Atena. I saw your comment on my blog, and I clicked over. Wow. This is awesome. I am inspired just by reading it. I often have similar thoughts about when to "educate" someone who has shown his/her ignorance, and honestly I'm terribly conflicted about it. I've both ignored it and addressed it, and I don't feel that either really made an impact. The key, perhaps, is to address it within a bubble of trust, on a foundation of friendship or mutual respect in the absence of friendship. That is why I find structured dialogs so beneficial. But it takes time, and it is certainly hard work. I have the trouble (maybe you can tell from my comments on BlogHer!) with having patience for ignorance. I know sometimes I end up saying something that probably makes someone shut down instead of engaging.I need to work on that.
I'll subscribe to your blog now. It is super powerful, and I look forward to reading more and learning more about you.
Thanks for commenting so we could "meet"!
